SETTING
Location
Most of the Iroquois people lived around the southern great lakes. They lived in St. Lawrence river valley, near streams and on hill tops, and migrated to West central New York in the early seventeenth century. Now they own eight reservations in New York and Wisconsin, and two in Ontario, Canada. Also many of the Iroquois live in Montreal, Quebec along the St. Lawrence River, today.
Climate
In the summer it was dry, warm and the summers were long. July temperatures ranged in the 20's. In the winter the snow was very deep and the winters were just below freezing.
Language
There are six Iroquoian dialects. Their language was written down in the twentieth century. There are four Iroquoian speaking groups; Huron league, Petun league, Neutral league, and the Erie. Also there are five leagues of the Iroquois; Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and the Mohawk's.
